This is the question 90% of buyers ask when they discover our shop. The 3DS XL and the New 3DS XL look very similar from the outside — but under the hood the differences are real. This guide helps you pick the right refurbished console for your use and your budget.
The main differences
Processor and performance
The New 3DS XL packs a noticeably more powerful processor than the older 3DS XL. In practice that means shorter loading times, smoother menus, and above all access to a handful of New 3DS exclusives (Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, the Super Nintendo Virtual Console games) that simply don't run on the older model.
The extra C-Stick
The New 3DS XL adds a small right analogue nub — the "C-Stick" — which the classic 3DS XL doesn't have. If you plan on playing Monster Hunter or any game with free camera control, it makes a real day-to-day difference.
Stabilised 3D
The New 3DS XL's top screen tracks your face to stabilise the 3D effect. On the classic 3DS XL the 3D blurs as soon as the console moves — on the New it stays sharp even on the train.
SD or MicroSD card
The 3DS XL uses standard SD cards, the New 3DS XL uses MicroSD. Both formats are very affordable today — not a deciding factor, especially since our consoles already ship with a library of more than 60 games installed.
Price
In our shop, a refurbished 3DS XL is generally €20 to €90 cheaper than the equivalent New 3DS XL. On a tight budget the 3DS XL is still an excellent choice: the game catalogue is almost identical.
